About the Crèche Lighting Program

The annual Lighting of the Crèche will celebrate its 68th year on November 30, 2010.

The life-size Nativity scene, called a Crèche, (which is French for manger) is set up and maintained by the Plainfield Lions Club.

Purchased in 1951 from a Chicago firm, the fiberglass figures cost about $5,000.

The camels were added in 1974 at a cost of $900 apiece.

Every year the scene is set up in the yard of Plymouth Congregational Church in downtown Plainfield.

Over the years the figures have been refurbished and repainted,
thanks to generous donations from the Plainfield community.

One of the fundraisers was the sale of limited editions of a lithograph of the scene by Hinsdale artist Paul Ashack.

The Lions Club members begin assembling the Crèche on the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving.

Then at 7 p.m., the annual Crèche Lighting program begins inside Plymouth Congregational Church,

featuring the reading of the Christmas gospels, traditional Christmas hymns,

and Christmas music by Plainfield high school Madrigal groups.

The evening culminates in the gathering outside around the Crèche as the community joins in singing Silent Night.

The Crèche is then illuminated, and remains in place until after the New Year.

This special celebration is the kickoff for the holiday season in Plainfield, and a beloved 68-year tradition.
