Defyance turn up at Cain. This past Wednesday night we were treated to a tantalizing event at Cain that featured the introduction of Defyance, a fashion forward fashion line and the stunning Tina Thompson who helped choreograph the dance routine that showcased the label’s durability, sleekness and it’s cutting fit.

Founded by former athlete Asaf Ganot, Defyance is a menswear line that utilizes innovative performance textiles to create fashionable, everyday clothing. The brand describes itself as “John Varvatos meets Nike.” The result is clothing that answers to common problems urbanites encounter, especially in unpredictable weather – sweat marks, the need for bulky and unflattering layers, unexpected rain, and general discomfort from constantly being on-the-go. In addition to functionality, the brand focuses on comfort, fit and style. The inspiration for the Spring/Summer 2010 line is Brazil. Some of the pieces in the line reflect the colors of the flag (blue, yellow, green) and also incorporate detailing and graphics that draw from the São Paolo art scene.

While the event didn’t include a fashion show, the line’s Sweat-DefyTM properties were showcased via a pre-recorded video of dancers wearing the line. The dancers, who were choreographed by Tina Thomspon of Skin Dance Company, had previously performed multiple 90 second pieces to popular hip hop songs in the middle of Times Square during the course of the day earlier. The clothing seemed to hold up, and after several performances, the clothing did not show signs of sweat.

In attendance was Richard Vorisek of Housing Works who got to tell me about his up-coming charity “Fashion for Action.” Running on its sixth year, the four-day gala’s opening benefit on November 19th will be hosted by Derek Lam. The benefit will be followed up by a designer sample sale (from 50-70% off) featuring over a million dollars of fashion apparel and beauty merchandise and experiences. Those already lined up to donate include Diane von Furstenberg , Diesel, Hugo Boss and DKNY. Defyance will also be making a contribution to the cause.

A special note of thanks to Elena, Benjamin and Pierre of Arsenic9   who helped make this all possible…

    Ms. Fitness Eastern USA

Ms. Fitness Eastern USA was held in the Nation's Capitol serving as a stepping-stone to Ms. Fitness USA, the national championships, taking place 4 weeks after.

New York's Tina Thompson-Pope's flexibility is about the best out there. Her range and balance during moves like the heel stretch and straddle press on elbows never ceases to amaze onlookers. She's also an artful performer using her ballet and dance talents and uses costumes to lend a dramatic effect. She performed a unique variation of a plange seldom seen that appeared like human art itself.

OCB Presidential Cup Bodybuilding & First Lady Figure and Fitness Model Championships

Seventy-two competitors were greeted by a packed audience at the fifth annual Presidential Cup event. The new OCB Fitness Model division made its debut at this event and April Marie DelGuidice's appearance was a great example of what it was meant to be like. Her stylish stances, poses and movements were reminiscent of a runway model.

Monica Maines made an excellent selection for the fitness apparel round. Her stylish garb both complimented her physique, skin tone and hair color and showed her great abs. Sherilee Newton appeared natural and confident on stage and made a nice choice of fitness apparel, using a red sports bra for contrast against her dark skin color and spandex shorts, which paired with the top made for a nice ensemble of the imagined "fitness model" look.

At the top of a strong inaugural field however, Yenny Polanco emerged as the Fitness Model division winner. She looked stunning in a fashionable fitness outfit and brought an ideal sense of style to the swimwear round, donning shades and sporting trendy swimwear. The look was suggestive of a tropical beach setting that made for a nice contrast against her skin, hair and body type.

Polanco's confidence was enhanced with sexy stances and movements, conveying a very photogenic and marketable package. She rounded out that package with a stunningly fit, toned body and is an ideal representative of what the OCB Fitness Model division was envisioning when created.

In the Figure category, Qawnana Crockett came in at her all-time best to clinch first place in both the novice and open classes in which she entered. Her polished look was highlighted by fine upper body conditioning and she had the bronzed, satiny skin coloring desired in fitness competitions. She made noticeable improvements with her presentation as well and looked stunning in her side poses.

Jenifer Wellman showed up with an impressively dry and defined upper body that her abs set off nicely. Stacy Marsh looked stunning with her golden tan, toned and balanced physique and shapely curves. The blonde Marsh's striking "Figure" look captured first in her class in the Novice division.

Other notables were Cher Weal who displayed well-rounded muscle shape and curves highlighted by eye-catching abs. Lisa Daly may have had the hardest physique among the figure competitors, while Joy Fenton's abs jumped out among her nicely sculpted upper body. Sherilee Newton's physique was almost as stunning as her stage presence, which was spectacular.

She's a natural in the public eye and has the physique to match her presence. She showed soft, pleasing curves, excellent symmetry and beautifully shaped muscle. The one to rise to the top and claim the Open overall title, however, was Tiffany Moore. She showed all-around firmness, appealing lines of definition, an impressive v-taper and hourglass symmetry.

Next on the venue was women's bodybuilding. Petite yet sleek Kelsey Doucette took the Female Best Poser award for the second time in as many outings this year. She also claimed the award at the April Richmond, Va. show. This time she came in with even more detail and shape carved out. Her presentation belied her 19 years and she has a promising future in the sport.

Celeste McKeefery was a standout in the women's bodybuilding. Her hardness couldn't be touched. She claimed the overall title and became eligible for IFPA pro competition in the process.

In men's bodybuilding Frank Barnes showed a thick, solid and ripped upper body to take the Novice title. Peter Conduragis performed a routine that ended with the audience screaming their lungs out wanting more. One of his routine's highlights was a backwards bend around an arch, complete with gunfire sounds reminiscent of the famous Matrix movie scene.

Neal Grossman appeared back on the circuit after overcoming surgery. Grossman picked up where he left off, collecting first place titles in the Masters 55+ divisions.

The Masters 35+ and third Open Class brought about a unique set of events. The top four placements in the Masters division were all within one point of each other in scoring. The top two ended in a tie while third and fourth were also tied and only a point behind. After the dust settled and ties were broken the order was Keenan Wilburn first, Dave Grogan second and David Moore third.

By the time the Open class rolled around, Grogan seemed to be a tad bit harder, Wilburn's muscles didn't seem as full as they did earlier in the day and Moore showed noticeably more hardness. The result this time for the three ended with Moore on top followed by Grogan, and then Wilburn.

Ken Brumfield showed up looking more cut and harder than ever before to take first in his Open class. Anthony Primola was next thanks to a rock-hard upper body and striking symmetry.

Massive David Neil, Jr. took third in his class. Frank Barnes' ripped upper body got past Neil, but it was Garrett Rhodes who ended on top. Rhodes is becoming known as "The Shredder," a name he lives up to every outing. He showed deeply carved muscle separation throughout, as well as fully pumped muscles. It was all set off by striated glutes, one of the best indicators of extreme conditioning.

Nate Hagerty and Duke Bell battled for the top spot in the third Open class. Hagerty came in with his usual lean and hard conditioning, perfect coloring, and trademark massive traps. He showed noticeable size gain since his win at the OCB Blacksburg, Va. show 10 months prior. His appearance was near flawless, but the elder Bell brought ripped conditioning, a massive upper back and muscle thickness, which seemingly gave him the edge to claim the class title. He would eventually claim the division overall title and lay claim to the IFPA pro card that came with it.

IFPA U.S. Capitol Women's Pro Bodybuilding Classic

Women's natural pro bodybuilding was at the nation's capitol August 12, 2006 for the IFPA U.S. Capitol Pro Classic. Ten ladies took part in the inaugural IFPA event, which was paired with the fifth annual OCB Presidential Cup.

Illinois' Sue Steele-Bergman competed in her first pro event. She's sure to rise in the ranks given her enthusiasm to be among the pros in the sport, and continued training will bring forth additional size that will make her more of a threat. She's an artful poser and had pleasing muscle shape.

Wisconsin's Normajean Harness' posing routines are always moving and full of emotion. Harness won an IFPA pro qualifier three month's earlier in Ann Arbor, MI but couldn't seem to nail her peak and display as chiseled of a look for this time.

Virginia's Cassondre Wilburn carries a lot of size and looks solid from head to toe. She showed some striations in her pecs but they weren't enough to move her up past 8th place.

Maryland's Deb Samuels showed great upper body conditioning and hardness to take 7th place.

Georgia's Dana Easterling didn't carry as much size as some of the others, but her nice dry, hard look revealed the detail to land her in 6th place. The symmetrical shape and length of her thighs paired with her slim waist and high lat tie-ins give her a pleasing symmetrical appearance.

    Dana Easterling.

Massachusetts' Christy Resendes appeared to be carrying the most size among the impressive lineup and took 5th place. There were four others who showed up a little harder though, and were able to rise above Resendes' size. Virginia's Linda Carpenter was one of those competitors. She took 4th place. She looked most impressive when hitting her most muscular pose, which showed her great upper arm size, brought out crazy striations throughout her shoulders and chest, and had her thick traps bulging up off her upper back.

Colorado's Leanne Allen took third in the show and the $500 cash prize that came with the placement. She displayed what was probably the most impressive upper body size when hitting her front lat spread and front double biceps poses, and the deep muscle bellies of her abdominals helped set off her appearance.

    Leanne Allen.

Maryland's Frances Parker made a statement at the pro level by finishing as runner up in her first pro show and claiming the $1,000 cash prize for doing so. Her skin looked bronzed, satiny and paper-thin and presented a nice polished look to her well-rounded, shapely and full biceps and shoulders. She treated the audience with an artful routine, complete with painted face for a more dramatic touch, and claimed an additional $100 cash prize for being named best poser of the show.

Florida's Karen Taylor earned the overall title. She packed an impressive amount of muscle and showed crisp, rock-hard muscle and razor cuts to boot. Prominent vascularity showed in her legs and striations covered her pecs and shoulders. A $2,000 cash prize and custom IFPA Pro ring came with the victory.

All competitors had to pass a polygraph exam prior to the show as a means to screen for use of banned substances in the drug-tested event. The top four place winners had to provide specimens for urinalysis as well.

Photos and video of the event are available. Ordering information can be found on the contest results page for the show on the IFPA website, www.IFPApro.com . The promoters wish to send a special thanks to Bodybuilding.com, Core Nutritional's and Fitness & Physique Magazine for their sponsorship of the event.
