Age of the Universe?

There are many things that are beyond the realms of science and human understanding.  (even the most devout atheist will admit this premise)

A few areas beyond science include:

  • Logical and mathmatical proofs can not be proven by science.  Science pre-suppose math and logic, so trying to prove them by science would be arguing in a circle.
  • Metaphysical truths - such as there are other minds other than my own, or that the external world is real, (example the movie the matrix); that the past was not created 5 minutes ago with the appearnce of age.
  • Science can not access ethics of morality - Science can not prove that the Nazi's did anything wrong or that Mother Teresa did anything right.
  • Science itself can not be justified itself by the scientific method.  For example - in Einstein's theory of relativity science must assume that the speed of light is a constant in a one way direction between points A and B.  (we have to assume it based on the facts)

So on the underlined points above, we can not be positive that the expanse of the universe following the "Big Bang" was at the exact same rate speed.  For example - if the rate of speed were 100,000 times faster, it is very possible that the age of the universe is just a few thousand years; but based on the evidence and the assumption that "what we see is how it has always been," we assume the age of the universe if roughly 14 billion years old, based on this expanse.

I have heard theologians argue that the Genesis account could easily be interepreted as "open" on the age theory and I have heard many argue for a "young earth/young creation."  - Either is viable, but my STRONG advice to both parties - is to let the "age" argument rest and join in on the incredibly strong points of creation/intelligent design - and how Christ is the only one that agrees with all evidences and revelations of humankind.

I feel much time is wasted on this subject in all honesty - it is a very interesting conversation behind closed doors, but ask the Bible seems to profess:  "Reach them where they are!"  - And with that, we have the majority of all young students in shcool being taught the Big Bang - but not even Richard Dawkins know what could have started the "bang."  - So my suggestion, is to focus it all on Christ, and focus on reaching people where they are; and not fight amongst ourselves.

  • What would Christ do?
