MOD OF THE MONTH ROME: TOTAL REALISM MOD

This is the mod to end all mods for Rome: Total War. These guys know what they’re doing when it comes to modding; and it shows.  From the haunting Latin music to the gritty combat and aggressively merciless A.I., this mod equals and often surpasses its official predecessors.

All the units in the game have been remodeled to look more realistic and the mod does a commendable job of trying to stick to historical accuracy with the units. The game adds new music and ton of new and renamed towns and a plethora of new mercenary units which can be recruited in ‘zones’ (I.e. celtic in celtic, greek in greek).

One major improvement is the ability to recruit local units once you conquer a province and build the appropriate barracks. This means that you can supplement your Legionnaires with home grown Gallic Swordsmen and Noble Cavalry, or Greek Peltasts, heavily expanding your myriad of unit choices.

Think of them as the old Seleucid chariots on steroids.

Last seen in Age of Mythology, the Hypaspistai makes a triumphant return to your monitor.

Ok, here are the factions that you can play as in RTR: Republic of Rome, Kingdom of Macedon, Ptolemaic Empire, Seleucid Empire, Republic of Carthage, Kingdom of Parthia, Kingdom of Pontus, Gauls, Germans, Illyrians, Kingdom of Armenia, Thracians, Greek City States, Kingdom of Numidia (please), Sarmatians, Iberians, and Kingdom of Bactria.

Most of these factions have unique and interesting units, except for the Sarmatians who only have a handful of cavalry units.

Several years ago I had the old version of RTR, and it was a pain in the ass to install; also it was replete with bugs. Now, however; the install is quick and painless and the game itself is rock solid. You can install it whether you have RTW Vanilla or RTW: Barbarian Invasion, just make sure to update whichever version you have first.
