                                  by: Stan

The headmaster at school found out as well, and then he announced it in a school assembly, which wasn't supposed to happen. I was quite shocked. He announced it in a very special way and no one pretty much understood. He said, "Oh, yes, Stan has become a captain of a Bulgarian Quidditch team." Everyone was looking at me, and I was sitting there and rolling my eyes. (Weeky Reader )

On Krum: He doesn't really talk much. He's more of a physical being he's described in the book as. As well as being sort of cold, he's also very warm because he develops feelings for Hermione and then he's really friendly. (Weeky Reader )

"I play Quidditch for the Durmstrang School," said Ianevski, "and for Bulgaria at the beginning in the World Cup. It was a great experience. I never imagined I would be riding a broomstick, flying around chasing a little ball, but it went well, I think. It's like entering a whole new world – a great new experience, it's just fantastic." (Empire Online )

"On my first few days, we did the maze scenes. In the very first scene, I had to fight with Cedric. I remember my heart pumping because it was the first time that I was in front of the cameras."

Mini Bio: For a long time, mystery surounded the identity of Stanislav Ianevski, a Bulgarian teenager chosen to play Quidditch Star and Durmstrang Tri-Wizard Champion Viktor Krum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Over 600 kids tried out for the first round of the casting that took place in Sofia on February 4 and 5. Approximatly 50 boys had videos sent to London for final judging, but in the end it was a London living Bulgarian student that won the role.

Stan (as he's sometimes called) was not a actor before landing the role. He was (like his soon-to-be movie counterpart) known at school for his athletic skills. And even though he'd heard Goblet of Fire casting was going on at the University, he was not a drama student and did not plan on auditioning. However, he was spotted by the Harry Potter casting director (Fiona Weir) while signing in for registration. She told the drama teacher that she wanted Stan to audition. The drama teacher at the school spoke to him and told him, so he went and was one of few asked to attend an acting workshop at the studio. After missing two workshops after his initial audition (for school related reasons), he thought he had lost the role but he was given a third shot at it when he was invited down to the studio and was finally officially given the role. Stan (unlike his sister) was not a fan of the Potter Series before landing the role. But after being cast, he says: "I watched all the films, I read the books, and I found out that my impressions were quite wrong".

In June 2004, the actor who would play Krum had his name released to the public. Like most of Goblet of Fire's new faces (who didn't have previous film work to their credit), even after his name was released attached to the role, images of him were not released. Then in January of 2005, the first picture of Stanislav Ianevski as Viktor Krum slipped into public eye. It was a image from a Harry Potter calendar (that reportedly, should not have been released yet). But now the world knew what the young man playing Viktor looked like.

As for getting on with the cast, fellow new comer to the Potter set, Robert Pattinson (who plays Cedric Diggory) has become good friends at him. They have even been spotted together off-set. Emma Watson (who plays Hermione, the object of Viktor's affection) is reported saying he's 'very sweet'.

Age: about 17/18 in Goblet of Fire; 19/20 as of last book- 'Half-Blood Prince'

Wizarding Academy Attended: Durmstrang Institute; Location of School: Somewhere in Northern Europe.

Physical Description: Viktor Krum was thin, dark, and sallow skinned, with a large curved nose and thick black eyebrows. He looked like an overgrown bird of prey. It was hard to believe he was only eighteen. (Goblet of Fire, US Edition, 105)

Wand: 10 1/4" Hornbeam with a dragon heartstring core, "quite rigid, thicker than one usually sees"; Wandmaker: Gregorovitch (Goblet of Fire, US Edition, 309)

Was recruited to play on the Bulgarian National Team for the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. In a turn of events that will proably be remembered forever, he caught the Snitch, but his team (Bulgaria's National team) lost to Ireland.

It's possible that Viktor was a member of Bulgaria's top Quidditch team, the Vratsa Vultures and that this team is the Bulgarian team that went on to represent the country in the World Cup.

He was recruited to play for the Pro-Quidditch team while still a student at Durmstrang. [Fred Weasley implied he was the only decent player on the team.] Many didn't know the incredible seeker was still a student.

He became champion for Durmstrang in the 1994-1995 Tri-Wizard Tournament. His competition was Fleur Delacour of 'Beauxbatons', Cedric Digory of 'Hogwarts' and the unexpected 4th champion - Harry Potter of 'Hogwarts'. Viktor did not win the competition.

He enjoyed swimming in the Hogwarts lake during his visit (despite the giant squid)

Since he's a bit surly looking, his aloofness makes him look more like a grumpy guy. He seems to be a bit shy despite his 'rough around the edges' appearance. When all the champions were together for the first time, he sort of stood away by himself. He doesn't have a lot of confidence with girls, he hung out in the library for days trying to get up the nerve to talk to Hermione. But once he's comfortable he seems to speak more, he's rather chatty with Hermione at the Yule Ball. I guess it was smooth sailing once he broke the ice and asked her out.

He was a little jealous of Harry when a nosey reporter spread false stories about the nature of Harry and Hermione's relationship. Seemed a little intimidated while asking Harry about it and he was very happy to find out it was all a lie. Does he know Ron has a crush on Hermione? We don't know.

He only appeared in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', but was still a minor secondary character in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' (only through the fact Hermione was still writing to him). In a 2004 chat, JK Rowling confirmed that he will appear in a future book.

JK Rowling was vague when asked if anything happened between Hermione and Viktor over the summer (the summer between books 4 and 5) she only mentioned Ron would love to know what happenned (which implies there's something for him to know).

Viktor - It means 'Victory'. This boy's name is used in German, Hungarian, Russian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. It corresponds to the English name Victor. Its source is a Latin expression meaning "Champion" or "Conqueror". A common feminine form of Viktor/Victor is Victoria.

Viktor was a champion for Durmstrang, so you can see how this choice of first name related to Character.

Krum - Well, there's two things worth talking about. First of all there's the lineage of the name, it can be traced to a famouse Bulgarian Khan. And secondly, it seems to be related to the German word, Krumm.

Historical Significance

Historically the name goes back to Khan Krum. Krum participated in many battles that aided in the expansion of his country (Bulgaria). Krum earned the nickname of Strashny [the Terrible] among his enemies, but is remembered for both external and internal development in his country. Along with his skills as a leader in battle, he established law and order in Bulgaria when he created the country's first written laws. Khan Krum's laws protected property against encroachment by thieves and made slander and drinking severely punishable. His laws applied to all Bulgarians and ensured unique state protection to the poor. Krum's laws also allowed him to unite Bulgarians and Slavs into a strong, integrated and centralized state and gained him the reputation of a remarkable and magnanimous ruler.

German Language Referance

There is the German word the corellates with Viktor's last name. The German word 'krumm'. It's from the Old High German 'krump' and means 'crooked' or 'slouched'. This seems to relate back to his physical looks. The way he's duck footed and uncoordinated on land.

Vratsa Vultures - Bulgaria's famous team. This team is a pioneer of the long goal (shooting well outside the scoring area). They're always willing to give new players a chance to make a name for themselves.
Notable Players:

Viktor Krum - recruited right out of High school and represented his country in the world cup.
